Important Alaska 529 withdrawal details
July 24, 2026
Staff, faculty, parents, and students:
Fee payment deadlines have a tricky way of sneaking up. Every semester, our Alaska 529 service center receives frantic calls from parents and students trying to expedite a withdrawal from their 529 account to the University of Alaska. While transferring funds from an Alaska 529 account to a University of Alaska student account isn't an instant process, the transfer can happen relatively quickly in most cases.
There are three ways to take a *
- Electronic transfer (ACH) to the University of Alaska **RECOMMENDED**
Students attending the University of Alaska can request that their withdrawal be sent electronically to their student account. - Send a check payable to the account owner鈥檚 address of record
A check is mailed directly to the account owner or beneficiary, and the student pays 绿奴天花板 directly. - Transfer the funds to a bank account
Funds are sent electronically to a bank, and the student pays 绿奴天花板 directly.
Withdrawal requests can be made online at Alaska529plan.com, by calling a customer service representative at 1-888-425-2752, or by mailing in a completed . When making the request, include the university name, the student's name, and the 绿奴天花板 ID.
As a rule of thumb, request a withdrawal by September 1, 2026. Consider making the request by August 14 if any of these scenarios apply:
- A check is being mailed.
- A new bank account has been added to the 529 plan (in some cases, safety holds can prevent withdrawals for up to 15 days after linking).
- The account owner/beneficiary has turned 18, and the parent was previously the account's Custodian.
Pro Tip: Consider sending funds directly to the school via electronic options like ACH.
What Happens if a Student Misses the Fee Payment Deadline?
The consequences of missing a fee payment deadline can be costly. Trust me, there is nothing fun about paying extra!
If missing the deadline is unavoidable:
- Contact the business office or bursar鈥檚 office immediately: Call the business office or accounts payable department and ask if they offer a temporary deferred payment plan.
- Use a backup payment method: Pay the amount out of pocket with a personal bank account or credit card to bridge the gap (be aware of the convenience fee for credit cards), then receive a reimbursement from the 529 later.
The takeaway: Save the date, schedule a withdrawal at least 10 business days in advance, and follow up with the university to confirm the funds were successfully applied to the account.
Alaska 529 staff are available to assist at 907-450-5671 or email Alaska529@alaska.edu.
* It is generally advisable for tax purposes to select the student as the payee.
